Augustus Stickland is a sculptor who works predominantly in the medium of wood . With a background in furniture making, he creates aesthetics through traditional woodworking practices that may assume a function but in reality are merely a form.
The artist uses locally sourced and storm fallen timbers to create the works, allowing the natural shaking and movement of the green timber to become major features in the artist’s pieces. The beauty created by the material reacting against the artist’s control allows a symbiosis to occur.
Wood, once living, continues to move along with the maker
Originally from Somerset, Augustus has always been interested in woodworking, there he trained under a master joiner and cabinet maker from whom he learnt his craft.
After two years he enrolled at Camberwell College of Arts to undertake the Fine Art Drawing course. Once finishing, he went to work with many award-winning furniture designers over the next 5 years learning new and complex woodworking skills. Along with his own fine art practice, he has continued to design and build commissioned projects for private clients.
Now based in North Yorkshire, Augustus is designing his own range of freestanding furniture as well as continuing to work along-side clients to full fill their interior wants and needs.
