About

Paul Mirfin is a contemporary British oil painter, musician, and former railway conductor based in Knaresborough, North Yorkshire. He spent 23 years working for Northern Rail, where the changing landscapes viewed from his train cab deeply inspired his creative vision.Mirfin first took up oil painting during the COVID-19 pandemic as a way to manage anxiety. His distinct impressionist style captures the movement and tranquility of the British countryside, featuring textured skies, landscapes, and railway infrastructure. He creates these striking, atmospheric scenes using a mix of traditional brushes and bold palette knife techniques. His artwork quickly gained widespread recognition, leading to a prestigious royal commission in 2023 to paint a birthday gift for King Charles’s 75th birthday. Today, Mirfin is a full-time artist. He operates his own independent art gallery and teaching studio, uniquely located right on platform two of the historic Knaresborough Railway Station. Which have been heavily featured on BBC Look North & Songs Of Praise. Paul Mirfin’s oil paintings celebrate the sweeping British countryside, railway lines, and spiritual themes. Inspired by his 23 years as a train conductor, his work frequently features moving trains, historic stations, and dramatic, open skies. He uses bold palette knives and brushes to create thick, layered textures. This technique gives his landscapes a strong sense of movement and depth. His art focuses heavily on light and weather, transforming everyday railway journeys into atmospheric scenes.
