Monochrome photographs are in blacks, greys and whites. But mono also includes images in single tones of other colours such as sepia.
So why my interest in mono images?
Mono images do not show the world as we all see it, they do not represent reality. By removing colour greater significance can be given to line, shape, shadows and texture within the image. Mono lends itself to bold compositions and minimalist images. It can transform the ordinary into the extraordinary.
Regarding the light, there is far more interplay of tones with mono, ranging from pure blacks, through a range of grey tones leading to pure white.
For years I have been an enthusiastic landscape photographer journeying to wild and remote places with variable weather conditions, attempting to capture moody and exciting photographs. Some of these I have shown in two previous exhibitions held during the Nidd Art Trail.
I have recently developed a keen interest in monochrome photography, which I feel has furthered my own artistic development in photography.
