My work
About my work
Sally has a reputation for original hand lettering, and a particular interest in linocut printmaking, environmental lettering and mixed media artwork. Public work includes the Walking Words panels at Chatham Place and the Forbury Square stone both in Reading. A commission for The University of Reading Carrington building resulted in a a large scale linocut print. As well as commissioned work, her experimental lettering and paintings are regularly exhibited in galleries and exhibitions. Recent work includes illustrations for Ian Brinton’s translation of Baudelaire in “Paris scenes”, and Oscar Wilde’s “The Happy Prince” published in October 2021 with a reprint in January 2022. Reading Museum has the artwork for this book in their permanent collection together with Sally’s linocut print of Market Place. The museum has also commissioned Sally to design and illustrate items for the museum shop. Sally continually experiments with colour and develop sketch book ideas. She wrote this artist’s note for Peter Robinson’s book, “English Nettles”: “How fortunate am I that my work is such a pleasure. There are moments when I feel so lucky that the thing that I am doing is “work”.
About
Sally Castle was born in Reading. She graduated from Maidstone College of Art and worked as a designer in London for ten years. Since then she has worked as an independent designer and illustrator and has designed covers and/or illustrated over forty books for Two Rivers Press. In 2022 Sally’s illustrated book The Happy Prince was long-listed for the World Illustration Awards; she also had her first solo exhibition. I am from Berkshire but last December I bought a house in Pannal to be close to my daughter who lives in Burn Bridge. I am well established in Berkshire and am looking forward to taking part in events and exhibitions in Yorkshire.
