About

I live in the village of Winksley, which is on the eastern edge of the Nidderdale AONB, just across the fields from Fountains Abbey. I am an Electrical Engineer (that’s my day job) and
have been walking, climbing and cycling in the countryside around Nidderdale since moving to the area 30 years ago. I love the beauty of our landscapes and the ever changing light of our seasons and I have always been inspired to capture that; initially in photographs and then in watercolour.

My watercolour journey started during a career break 17 years ago but a busy life didn’t leave enough time to develop skills and find confidence. Then, last year, I started working part-time and that has provided the opportunity I needed to really get down to some serious painting!

My work

About my work

My art education has been long, difficult and entirely of my own making! I really should have gone to night school and had some proper teaching; retrospect makes us wiser. I’m not self-taught; my teachers were art books, DVDs, YouTube videos and more recently Instagram. We are blessed in this age to be able to watch tutorials for free by masters on the other side of the world!

I finally feel that I am now starting to develop my own style. A large part of that has come from painting outdoors, which I love (despite the challenges). When the “COVID lock-down” started I decided to concentrate on painting down by the River Laver in Winksley Woods, behind where we live; so this year’s theme of ‘Woodland’ has turned out to be ideal for me.

I hope you enjoy my pictures. If you are interested in seeing a wider selection of my work then please visit my website or Instagram page.
