Frances Payne

Mixed Media Artist & Printmaker

Darley

About

Throughout Frances’ career she has embraced a process of both informal and formal studies in the pursuit of the development of a rounded and technically sound arts practice. Having worn many hats over the years, Frances’ keen interest in the history of visual culture informed much of her earlier practice development. 2010 saw Frances make a full-time commitment to her career as an artist and, in 2016, she graduated with Merit from Harrogate College of Art with a Masters Degree in Creative Practice. A passionate believer that the arts are, in equal measure, essential and invaluable to education, sustainable economies and healthy societies, Frances is an experienced and enthusiastic teacher of Art. Recently returned from a period of living and working in Perth, Western Australia, Frances works out her home studio in Darley. She also teaches Fine Art & Photography at York College and delivers a wide range of workshops and classes at the Mercer Art Gallery, Harrogate.

My work

About my work

Taking inspiration from folklore and myth, and the natural world to which these stories are tethered, I work across a range of media with the aim of creating pieces of whimsy that invite deeper consideration. The deeply personal relationships we have with familiar, often told stories, and the landscapes which they inhabit is ever present in my work. These stories sit on the very edge of my everyday thoughts, subtly providing a dash of ephemeral enchantment to my interpretations of the world around me. Favoured mediums include cyanotype and linocut prints, layered papercuts and pen & ink drawings, blind debossing, polychromos pencil and watercolours. The process of losing myself in the many steps of creating a piece is always exciting, always evolving. Though I might have a vague idea of a ‘feeling’ or idea I want to capture, I never know exactly how the layered elements will work together until it is close to completion.

Details of upcoming exhibitions and their locations can be found on my website, Facebook and Instagram – see details below. I can also be contacted via all these channels, should you wish to discuss commissions etc.
